Preschool Philosophy

A Forest Preschool can be described as a preschool without walls or ceilings. At the Field & Forest Outdoor Preschool, children and staff spend their time outdoors on the beautiful 5-acre wooded site in Woodinville, Washington. The day is held outdoors in all seasons and under most weather conditions.  Field & Forest Preschool maintains an amazing 18 foot TIPI on-site, which can be used for story-time, activities, or shelter during extreme weather.

Forest Schools have demonstrated success with children of all ages who consistently visit/experience an outdoor environment on a regular basis. Through play, children have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks and, most importantly, how to use their own initiative to solve problems and cooperate with others.

The Field & Forest Outdoor Preschool develops and nurtures:

self-awareness, intrinsic motivation, empathy, good social communication skills, independence, self-regulation, positive mental attitude, self-esteem and confidence, an appreciation, awareness, and connection to the natural world.

At The Field & Forest Outdoor Preschool, children are encouraged to play, explore and learn in a natural environment, whatever the weather.  Adult supervision is provided to assist, rather than to lead. A distinctive feature of Forest Preschools is the emphasis with play using items found or fashioned from objects in nature, rather than commercial toys.

Children are encouraged to dress for the weather, with waterproof clothes and warm layers, according to the climate.
